Brief Description

This session introduces participants to the fundamentals of forensic accounting- the different types of fraud as defined in the ACFE manual, the application of accounting, auditing, and investigative techniques to uncover and prevent fraud and financial misconduct. The session will include practical examples and a short case exercise relevant to the Somali context. 


Learning Outcomes

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the concept and purpose of forensic accounting and how it differs from traditional auditing.
  2. Identify common types of fraud and their warning signs.
  3. Understand the key steps in a forensic investigation process- from evidence collection to reporting.
  4. Apply basic data analysis techniques to detect anomalies.
  5. Recognize the ethical considerations in conducting forensic accounting engagements.

  1. Introduction to Forensic Accounting – definition, objectives, and scope
  2. Types of Fraud and Red Flags – asset misappropriation, corruption, financial statement fraud
  3. Fraud Frameworks – Fraud Triangle and Fraud Diamond
  4. Forensic Investigation Process – planning, evidence gathering, chain of custody, documentation
  5. Data Analysis Tools – using Excel and simple analytical techniques to detect fraud
  6. Reporting and Ethics – structure of a forensic report, professional conduct, confidentiality
  7. Mini Case Study & Discussion – application of learned concepts to a local scenario
